Statement

in the explanation of position on the draft resolution entitled

at the plenary meeting of the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly

23 May 2024

Mr. President,

We have closely followed deliberations on the draft resolution entitled “International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica” and took careful note of the submissions by all interested parties.

Azerbaijan enjoys strategic partnership with the Balkan countries based on close historic ties, mutual respect and shared interests, and attaches importance to the development of relations and cooperation with them and is genuinely interested in peace, security and stability in the region.

Azerbaijan knows well how painful the wounds of the war are and how accountability and reconciliation are important for ensuring justice and building trust and peace.

Azerbaijan reaffirms its unwavering support for the unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all Balkan countries and strongly opposes any attempt of interference in the internal affairs of States.

We believe that ensuring accountability, provision of justice and truth, as well as the commemoration of victims of past crimes require careful planning and preparation, and that actions by the United Nations in this regard should enjoy the widest possible support and be adopted by consensus in order to better serve for reconciliation and mutual understanding between peoples and within societies.

Under the considerations above, Azerbaijan will be unable to vote should the draft resolution is called to a vote.

Thank you.
